Campground-Style BBQ Pulled Pork
Here’s a delicious, easy-to-follow BBQ pulled pork recipe perfect for a camping trip! You can cook this campfire or slow-cooker style!
Prep Time: 15 min
Cook Time: 6–8 hrs (slow cooker) or 4–6 hrs (campfire/oven)
Servings: 6–8
Ingredients
- 4–5 lb pork shoulder (also called pork butt)
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite)
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup chicken broth or water
- Hamburger buns or slider rolls, for serving
Instructions
1. Prep the pork:
- Mix the brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne in a small bowl.
- Rub the spice mix all over the pork shoulder. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes (or overnight if possible) for maximum flavor.
2. Cook the pork:
- Slow Cooker Method: Place the pork in the slow cooker. Pour in apple cider vinegar and chicken broth. Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours, until the pork is tender and pulls apart easily.
- Campfire Method: Wrap the seasoned pork in heavy-duty foil. Place it on a bed of coals or a grill over indirect heat. Cook slowly for 4–6 hours, turning occasionally, until tender.
3. Shred the pork:
- Remove the pork from the cooker or foil. Use two forks to shred it into bite-sized pieces.
4. Add BBQ sauce:
- Stir in your favorite BBQ sauce until the pork is evenly coated.
5. Serve and enjoy:
- Pile the pulled pork onto buns or slider rolls. Optional toppings: coleslaw, pickles, or extra BBQ sauce. Perfect for campfire gatherings at Terre Haute Campground!
