Campfire Donuts
Donuts always come to mind when we think of breakfast in the mornings. You can even make your own donuts while camping! Check out the recipe below to learn how.
Ingredients:
- 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Cinnamon sugar mixture (optional)
- Powdered sugar (optional)
- Nutella or jam (optional, for filling)
Instructions:
- Prepare your campfire and let it burn down to a bed of hot coals. You can also use a portable camping stove with a frying pan if allowed.
- Open the can of refrigerated biscuit dough and separate the individual biscuits.
- Stretch each biscuit slightly to make it flatter and create a hole in the center, similar to a traditional donut shape. You can use your fingers or a small round cookie cutter to make the hole.
- Place a large cast-iron skillet or frying pan on the campfire or camping stove. Add enough vegetable oil to the pan, about 1 inch deep, and heat the oil until it reaches around 350-375°F (175-190°C). You can test the oil’s temperature by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil – it should sizzle and turn golden brown in about 30 seconds.
- Carefully place the prepared doughnuts into the hot oil, a few at a time, without overcrowding the pan. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they turn golden brown. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to flip the donuts.
- Once the donuts are cooked, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate or cooling rack to drain any excess oil.
- Optional: While the donuts are still warm, you can roll them in a cinnamon sugar mixture or dust them with powdered sugar for extra flavor. Alternatively, you can fill them with Nutella or your favorite jam by using a piping bag or squeezing the filling into the center of the donuts.
- Serve the campfire donuts warm and enjoy!
Note: Be cautious when working with hot oil and keep a close eye on the donuts while frying to prevent burning. Ensure proper fire safety and use appropriate equipment for cooking over a campfire.
